Root Canal Treatment in Ashland, OH
Ashland Dental Arts performs root canal therapy on front teeth and molars in our Ashland, OH office. A root canal removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth so you can keep the tooth instead of losing it.
What is a root canal?
Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed — due to deep decay, a crack, or repeated dental work on the same tooth — a root canal removes that tissue, cleans and shapes the canals inside the root, and seals the tooth. The result is a tooth that is free of infection and can continue to function normally.
Signs you may need a root canal
Common signs include a toothache that lingers or throbs, sensitivity to hot or cold that does not go away quickly, swelling or tenderness in the gum near a tooth, or a tooth that has darkened. These symptoms can also have other causes, so only an exam and x-rays can confirm whether a root canal is needed. Call us at (419) 496-0132 if you are experiencing tooth pain.
Root canal vs. extraction
Keeping your natural tooth is almost always the preferred option when it is possible. A root canal saves the tooth, preserves the surrounding bone, and avoids the need to replace the tooth with an implant, bridge, or denture. We will explain both options so you can make an informed decision. See our tooth extractions page for more on when an extraction is the right choice.
What happens during treatment
The area around the tooth is numbed thoroughly before we begin. We then access the inside of the tooth, remove the infected or inflamed pulp, clean and shape the root canals, and fill and seal them. A temporary or permanent filling closes the opening. Most root canals are completed in one or two visits depending on the tooth and the extent of the infection.
Why a crown often follows
After a root canal, the tooth is more brittle and more vulnerable to fracture — especially a back tooth that takes the force of chewing. A crown covers and protects the treated tooth and helps it last. Your dentist will tell you whether a crown is recommended for your specific tooth. Learn more about dental crowns in Ashland.
After your root canal
Some tenderness in the area is normal for a few days after treatment. Over-the-counter pain relievers are usually sufficient. Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until your permanent restoration is in place. Call us if pain or swelling gets worse rather than better.

Does a root canal hurt?
The area is thoroughly numbed before treatment begins. Most patients are surprised by how manageable the procedure is. We will make sure you are comfortable before we start.
Will I need a crown after a root canal?
Often, yes — especially on back teeth, which take more chewing force. A crown protects the treated tooth and helps it last. Your dentist will tell you whether a crown is recommended for your specific tooth.
Is it better to pull the tooth?
Keeping your natural tooth is almost always the preferred option when it is possible. A root canal saves the tooth and preserves the bone around it. Extraction requires replacing the tooth to avoid shifting and bone loss. We will explain your options so you can make an informed decision.
