Sedation Dentistry for Adults in Ashland, OH
Ashland Dental Arts offers oral sedation for adults in Ashland, OH to help nervous patients relax during dental treatment. We do not offer sedation for children.
What is oral sedation?
Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed medication before your dental appointment to help you feel calm and relaxed during treatment. The medication is taken by mouth, usually about an hour before your visit. You remain conscious and able to respond to your dentist, but you feel significantly more at ease. Many patients have little or no memory of the procedure afterward. Oral sedation is different from nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or IV sedation, which we do not offer.
Who oral sedation can help
Oral sedation is a good option for adults who feel significant anxiety about dental visits, have had difficult dental experiences in the past, have a strong gag reflex that makes treatment uncomfortable, need a longer or more involved procedure and want to stay comfortable throughout, or have difficulty sitting still for extended periods. If any of these describe you, ask us whether oral sedation might be appropriate for your situation.
Is oral sedation right for you?
Not everyone is a candidate for oral sedation. Before prescribing sedation medication, your dentist will review your health history, current medications, and any conditions that might affect how you respond to sedation. Some medical conditions or medications can make oral sedation less appropriate. Your dentist makes the final decision based on your individual health profile. Call us at (419) 496-0132 to discuss whether sedation is an option for you.
How to prepare for your sedation appointment
We will give you specific instructions before your appointment. Follow them carefully. You will need to arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to and from the office — do not drive yourself. You should not drive or operate machinery for the rest of the day after taking oral sedation. Depending on the medication, you may also be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a period of time before your visit. Wear comfortable clothing and plan to rest at home after your appointment.
Treatments often done with sedation
Oral sedation can be used for a range of dental procedures. Common examples include tooth extractions and wisdom teeth removal, root canal treatment, dental implant placement, and longer restorative appointments. If you are anxious about an upcoming procedure, ask us at your consultation whether sedation is appropriate for that treatment.
Other ways we help you feel comfortable
Sedation is not the only tool we have. We take time to explain each step before we begin, work at a pace that feels manageable, and check in with you throughout your appointment. If you need a break, just let us know. Many patients who were once very anxious about dental care find that a calm, communicative approach makes a significant difference. We are happy to talk through your concerns before your visit.
